Cheating. Double crossing. Ethics? The complicated workings of the prohibition-era mafia underworld are brilliantly (and violently) depicted by the Coen Brothers. The story is told through the eyes and influence of the always-in-trouble, yet always-cool Tom Reagan. He is involved in the struggle between two rival mobs vying for control of their town’s gangland as well as under the spell of his crime boss’s girlfriend. In this world of suspicion and shifting allegiances, it isn’t clear who’s on whose side, except for police and politicians, who are on the side of whoever’s buying them off.
The film swaggers with all the gusto and bravado of the drinking, violence, and tough-guy talk it portrays. Intense action sequences and black humor are complimented or contrasted by scenes of facial expressions laden with thought and emotion. Ridiculous yet convincing caricatures of gangland characters and crooked cops artfully render familiar stereotypes while deftly avoiding cliché. The Coen Brothers’ talent for memorable characters is complimented by a colorfully detailed setting and cynical but riveting story, which together rival the best roaring 20’s mob movies and make it a modern classic.
