Andreas finds himself in the middle of nowhere with a beard, a dirty suit and a baseball cap. From this point, he is accommodated sympathetically and politely with all the living comforts he needs. He has a job at a firm and a girlfriend. It seems too good to be true. Yet among this harmony and order, he senses that something is missing...
Jens Lien presents a story of an inquiry we all understand: the search for truth. Lien’s deft use of repetition and cycles, in music, story segments, human behavior and background scenery emphasize the stability and predictability of Andreas’s world. Yet in combination with the strange and unexpected discoveries that he makes, these cycles and patterns construct a framework for the path that he follows, revealing details seemingly noticed only by him about the world he is in and about the world he once knew.
At times a dark comedy, it is mostly a social commentary on the conformity and superficiality of modern urban living. But our identification with Andreas is stronger, as throughout the film until the end, he never gives up as the others around him have, in a search for a more human world with more feeling and meaning, one which he knows is out there....
